Fantasy Football: St. Louis Rams Season Preview
By Bruce Matson
St. Louis Rams Season Preview
The Rams finished last season with a 6-10 record while finishing 4th in the NFC West Division. The Rams are looking to make the playoffs next season by playing strong defense and controlling the clock by running the ball. They don’t have the most prolific offense in the league, but they do have some pieces that could be interesting in fantasy this season.

Foles finished last season ranked 29th among QBs in fantasy production averaging 22.31 fantasy points per game. Foles had his season cut short last year due to a shoulder injury during week 9. During the 8 games that he played in he had 6 games where he scored 20 fantasy points or more. I look for his production to reduce some this year due to being in the Rams offense where the sheer passing volume is a lot less compared to Philadelphia’s offense. Foles will be a solid stream during favorable matchups this season.
Running Back
Todd Gurley
Gurley was drafted in the first round of this year’s draft (10th overall). The odds are high that he’s going to miss at least the first month of the season, and possibly more. His price range in fantasy drafts is too high currently, because it’s hard to justify using a 4th-5th round pick on a player that’s going to miss 4-6 games. The opportunity cost is too high during those rounds; when you can draft a solid wide receiver or a running back that’s going to be productive, and still give you production during the first month of the season. Gurley is a generational talent, I love him in dynasty, but it’s hard to justify taking this big of gamble with your roster when there’s going to be startable players still on the board. If Gurley is falling in your draft then I recommend drafting him, because he could be major contributor for your team during the 2nd half of the year.
Mason finished last season ranked 30th among running backs with 136.80 fantasy points while averaging 11.40 fantasy points per game. As a rookie, Mason broke out during week 7 against the Seattle Seahawks where he rushed for 85 yards and a TD. After Mason broke out he had 5 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more. Mason is going for a song during drafts this year. He is going to get a significant amount of work during the first part of the year, and you can draft him during in the 6th round or later. I have drafted him in the 8th round in a few leagues. Don’t expect Mason to be a stud, but he’s going to be a tremendous value compared to what you are going to pay for him in drafts.
Wide Receiver

Britt finished last season ranked 55th among wide receivers with 143.70 fantasy points averaging 8.98 fantasy points per game. Britt had 6 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more. Britt should be more productive this season. He’s going to have another year or experience in the offense. Nick Foles is a lot better QB then what the Rams had last year, and he can throw the ball down field a lot better than the previous QBs. I don’t expect Britt to have a break out season, but he could be a solid flex play most weeks.
Quick finished last season 90th among wide receivers with 82 fantasy points while averaging 11.71 points per game. Quick had 4 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more. Quick’s season was cut short due to suffering a shoulder dislocation during week 8 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Don’t forget about Quick, he was finally putting it together last season, and with new QB Nick Foles, Quick could have a big year. He’s going to come at a value in drafts this year, so there isn’t going to be much risk drafting him.
Put Bailey on your watch list. Bailey is a smaller receiver who wins by running crisp routes and catching everything that’s thrown his way. Bailey lacks athleticism, but when given the opportunity he has been able to produce in some games. Just keep an eye on him during the beginning of the season just in case Foles develops a rapport with Bailey.
Tight End
Cook finished last season ranked 17th among tight ends scoring 134.90 fantasy points while averaging 8.43 fantasy points a game. Cook had 4 games where he scored 10 or more fantasy points. Cook is going to go late in drafts, and he might go undrafted in some leagues. Cook will be a solid stream off waivers during favorable matchups this season.
Defense/Special Teams
The Rams defense finished 9th last season in fantasy output with 123 fantasy points. The Rams had 4 games where they scored 10 fantasy points or more. Look for the Rams to finish in the top-10 again this season. Their D-line has more depth, adding former Lion defensive lineman Nick Fairley this offseason. Rams are not going to be a defense that you can stream, because the premium for them is going to be high in drafts, which isn’t conducive to the strategy of streaming defenses.
