Power ranking the NL MVP candidates following Giancarlo Stanton’s injury
No surprise here, as Max Scherzer is having one of the best seasons that a starting pitcher could possibly have. Remember when the Detroit Tigers didn’t want to pay Scherzer the kind of money he thought he was worth, and instead spent it on Victor Martinez? I’m pretty sure everyone now can admit that was a huge mistake. The Washington Nationals were the smart organization that decided to pay Scherzer handsomely, and now look like geniuses, given the fact that Scherzer has yet to let the team down.

In fact, if anything, the Nationals have let Max down. The team is currently 2.5 games ahead of the New York Mets in first place of the NL East, but Scherzer’s 9-5 record looks quite average for a serious MVP candidate. That is because his offense failed to get him run support in his first three losses, where he allowed two runs or less in the defeats. Scherzer could easily be 12-2 right now — or even 13-2, as a no-decision was recorded when he gave up just one earned run in an April start.
Scherzer-mania is running rampant in Washington D.C. and every game he starts officially causes a “no-hitter watch.” At the pace he is going, Scherzer is likely to be a top-two or three candidate until the very end of the year.
