When the NBA Free Agency period opened up on Wednesday, one of the deals that was reported to have been met was that between Tristan Thompson and the Cleveland Cavaliers. With LeBron James more than certainly wanting Thompson back in the fold, this was extremely good news for the organization and the fans.
Well, don’t get all too excited just yet.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the two sides actually may be further apart on a potential new deal than was reported on Wednesday.
After progress was made yesterday, Cavs & Tristan Thompson are currently still apart on contract talks, sources told ESPN.

It’s not the end of the race by any means, but it’s not good news, especially considering what was reported on Wednesday. While there are a lot of pieces that LeBron James wants to see back with the Cavaliers before he re-signs his own new contract, Thompson might actually be the most important piece of the puzzle.
During the Cavaliers’ NBA Finals run last season, Thompson was a key piece in helping the team stay competitive with his work on the glass, both on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Thompson was a rebounding machine and he gave the Cavaliers about as many second chances as one player possibly could.
After his performance in the playoffs this past season, many have assumed that Thompson is looking for a max contract, which is where the distance in the talks might be right now at the moment.
In the end, though, LeBron has made it pretty clear that he wants Thompson back playing with him next season and beyond, so Dan Gilbert should end up getting something done one way or another.
