Big news in the world of boxing, as Floyd Mayweather will reportedly be stripped of his WBO title. According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, the organization will likely take back the strap on Monday, July 6.
According to Chris Williams with Boxing News 24, Mayweather failed to pay the WBO’s $200,000 sanctioning fee for the title, and did not relinquish his WBA/WBC junior middleweight titles as previously agreed upon.
"The WBO gave Mayweather a deadline of July 3rd, at 4:30 p.m. ET to vacate his WBA/WBC junior middleweight titles, and give the WBO a sanctioning fee for the title. If/when the WBO strip Mayweather of his WBO title, they’ll then be giving the full title to interim WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley."
After defeating Manny Pacquiao on May 2, Mayweather initially claimed that he would give up all titles so as to give other fighters a shot at the belt. At the time, WBO president Paco Valcarcel stated that Mayweather’s ownership of the belt was mainly a formality, and that it would be relinquished almost immediately. However, two months have passed and Mayweather has yet to vacate his titles.
Once Mayweather is stripped of his title Timothy Bradley will officially become the WBO welterweight champion. Bradley defeated Jessie Vargas on June 27, and currently holds the title of interim welterweight champ.
