Rory McIlroy ruptured a ligament in his ankle while playing soccer over the weekend.

The Open Championship my be without its defending champion in two weeks, given that Rory McIlroy has ruptured the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) in his ankle. According to his post on Instagram, McIlroy was playing soccer with some friends over the weekend when the injury occurred. The extent of the damage is unknown, though McIlroy claims to have already started rehabbing.
McIlroy is the defending champion of both the Open Championship and the PGA Championship, golf’s final two majors. According to ESPN, he was scheduled to play in the Scottish Open this coming week as a tuneup for St. Andrews. As of now he is still listed as a part of the field for both events.
The world’s No. 1 ranked golfer is having yet another banner season this year. In nine PGA events this season he has placed outside of the top-10 only twice, and won two tournaments – the World Golf Championships and Wells Fargo Championship. As far as majors, he placed fourth at the Masters and tied for ninth at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.
The 2015 Open Championship from St. Andrews will take place from Thursday, July 16 through Sunday, July 19.
