3B Justin Turner, Los Angeles Dodgers

Justin Turner has had a resurgence–actually not the best word since it would assume he was ever surging–as he’s become a full-time player in Los Angeles after a middling career while playing his home games at Citi Field for the New York Mets. His .943 OPS is better than all but a handful of National League players.

He has 11 home runs and 37 RBI for the National League West-leading Dodgers.

Turner’s problem, if you will, is the fact he plays third base in the National League. Each of the three players who made the roster from the position–starter Todd Frazier, Nolan Arenado and Kris Bryant–were equally deserving. And all have more “star power”.

Nonetheless, it has to be tough to accept for Dodgers fans, and Turner himself, to see him left off the roster considering how good he has been this year. And frankly, he has been really good.

After first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and rookie centerfielder Joc Pedersen, it is conceivable Turner is the Dodgers’ MVP through the first half of the season, at least offensively.

And the sad part is Turner may not get this chance again. He is having a career year. Frazier, Arenado and Bryant all figure to perennial All-Star candidates at the position (though Bryant may be so at a different position in the future).
