NBA Rumors: Deron Williams, Dallas Mavericks agree to two-year deal
By Josh Hill
After getting bought out by the Brooklyn Nets, Deron Williams and the Dallas Mavericks will finalize a two-year contract.
The Deron Williams era in Brooklyn has come to an end, as the guard agreed to a buyout on Friday afternoon that sent him to waivers and away from the Nets. Williams was traded to Brooklyn just a few years ago, but things never panned out and his heart was never in it — at least, that’s the way it seemed.
Not even a $100 million contract could motivate D-Will to step things up for the Nets, and his tenure with the team has come to an end.
It’s on to the next venture though, and that is seemingly taking him to his hometown of Dallas and the Mavericks.
According to ESPN Dallas, the Mavericks and Williams will finalize a two-year deal once the guard clears waivers and officially hits free agency.
Of course, this is assuming Williams clear waivers, which is almost certainly going to do.
This comes as no surprise, as it was rumored in the early on Friday morning that the reason Williams was looking for a release was so that he could swoop in and rescue the Mavs from a rough offseason. Mark Cuban lost out on DeAndre Jordan and end up handing a max contract to Wesley Matthews as a result.
Williams isn’t the player he was when he showed so much promise in Utah after coming out of Illinois, but there’s still time for him to redeem his career. Dallas needs an All-Star point guard to not only erase the bitter taste that Rajon Rondo left when he slugged his way out of town, but so the lineup can finally have a leader they need.
This is still Dirk’s team, but adding Deron Williams to the mix is going to be a shot of adrenaline that the Mavs need — assuming it doesn’t crash and burn on them.
