Despite limited minutes, he can still play

Thanks to knee injuries and long term health issues because of them, Stoudemire is no longer the explosive player that can play 30+ minutes and average 25+ points per game. Still, that doesn’t mean he’s completely washed up.

In fact it’s just the opposite, as Stoudemire has shown that he can be an effective player in limited minutes. In his time split between New York and Dallas, he averaged 11.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in about 21 minutes per game.

Even better, he averaged 23.5 points per 36 in Dallas. With all the problems that the Mavericks had at the end of the year, Stoudemire was one of the lone bright spots. He showed that he can still shoot his mid-range jumper, and on occasion dial back the clock to make some explosive dunks.

In Miami, if he can do the same thing, then that will be a huge addition to the Heat offense. To have a veteran that can come off the bench, play 15-20 minutes and provide 10-15 points per game is invaluable.

There have been examples, time and time again, of teams that are in trouble when their star players go to the bench because no one can fill that scoring void. In Miami, when Bosh goes out, Stoudemire becomes next man up. And with an emerging post presence like Whiteside down low, Stoudemire should get plenty of open looks on the floor.

He will thrive in this role because of his ability to play still.
