2001

The 2001 All-Star Game wasn’t particularly memorable for any one particular moment, or one player stealing the show on his own as most of the games on this list were. Instead the 2001 All-Star Game in Seattle’s Safeco Field just had a little bit of everything.

It was the final All-Star Game for two future Hall of Famers–Cal Ripken, Jr. and Tony Gwynn–and Ripken especially was honored multiple times. First there was this special moment:

And then he made good on it, pounding a dramatic home run to leave us with the best of memories for baseball’s iron man.

It also was the chance to say hello to that year’s first-year darling, Ichiro Suzuki, who early that year had become a craze in Seattle and throughout baseball for his slappy hitting style, speed and incredible arm from right field for a good Seattle Mariners squad.

And it brought some fun, when Tommy Lasorda was nearly decapitated by a Vladimir Guerrero broken bat flying at him as he was honorarily coaching third base for the National League.

Was it the best All-Star Game? Objectively, no. But it was fun. And fun is the point of an All-Star Game.
