MLB Franchise Four – Biggest Snubs for Each Team
Diamondbacks – Brandon Webb
Franchise Four: Paul Goldschmidt, Luis Gonzalez, Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling
Alright, I get the fact that the Diamondbacks are a relatively young franchise and have a very limited pool on which to draw upon for their Franchise Four. I get that it means that Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, and Luis Gonzalez all get their say in the matter, having all been responsible for the team’s lone World Series championship.
But are we so unimaginative that Paul Goldschmidt gets placed within the team’s ALL-TIME Franchise Four?!?
Sure, Goldschmidt is important to the DBacks now and he’s the future of the franchise in Arizona. It just seems awful short-sighted for a franchise with so little history in which to lose a player in.
Brandon Webb was the ace the team needed after the departure of Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. For three great seasons, he was perhaps the most dominant pitcher in the National League, winning the Cy Young in 2006 and finished second in each of the next two seasons. However, his candle burned way too brightly and he was gone from baseball after just one start in 2009.
Still, in those seven seasons he spent in Arizona, Webb went 89-62 with a 3.27 ERA, a 3.50 FIP, and a 7.3 K/9 ratio. There is likely still a divot in front of home plate at Chase Field where Webb forced opposing hitters to beat his sinker into the ground.
