Chicago Cubs – Sammy Sosa

Franchise Four: Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Ron Santo, Billy Williams

The championship drought may not have been friendly to the Chicago Cubs over the years, but they have still managed to push that history behind them and still find some very memorable players with which to build the club’s history around. The Friendly Confines have always been home to some of the best and the brightest in the league, as represented by the likes of Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Ron Santo, and Billy Williams.

However, were Cubs fans a bit dismissive of Sammy Sosa?

Sure, Sosa stands alongside Mark McGwire as one of the biggest faces of the “Steroid Era”, but it is hard not to give the man some credit for what he brought to the Chicago Cubs during those years. In 13 seasons in a Cubs uniform, Sosa delivered 545 home runs (1st), 1,414 RBI (3rd), a wRC+ of 134 (tied 1st), and an overall WAR of 60.7 in a Cubs uniform (5th). That led to seven All-Star appearances, an MVP award, and six additional top-10 finishes in the balloting.

Sosa may have been a product of the generation, but he brought a ton of joy to the Cubs franchise during that generation and he shouldn’t be completely shunned for it.
