By Mike Dyce
Jordan Spieth opened the British Open with a -5 score in the first round.
As the 2015 British Open Championship gets underway, all eyes are on young American Jordan Spieth. The golfer is having an incredible 2015 campaign, already winning two majors at The Masters and the U.S. Open. Fans around the world want to see if Spieth can win a third consecutive major at the British Open to put himself in position to contend for a the calendar year grand slam.
His quest to accomplish this feet got off to an incredible hot start. Through the first seven holes of the first round, Spieth sunk five birdie shots. The back nine wasn’t quite as kind to Spieth who shot two birdies but also scored two bogeys to break even.
Spieth is certainly in good shape heading into the second round with a score of -5. It has him tied for seventh and just two strokes behind Dustin Johnson, who sits atop the leaderboard all by himself with a -7.
Certainly Spieth hasn’t quite risen to the level of Tiger Woods during the height of his run, but you have to wonder how much of a psychological impact Spieth has on his fellow contenders by simply lurking in the hunt like a younger Woods had.
Especially when you consider that Spieth and Johnson are paired together in a group. Johnson and Spieth will tee off at 9:34 a.m. ET on Friday afternoon for the second round of the tournament at St. Andrew’s and it will surely be a thrilling group to watch.
