The MLB trade deadline is approaching, but the Toronto Blue Jays might end up staying quiet despite all the noise at the moment.

While the Toronto Blue Jays are in the hunt for the AL Wild Card, and to an extent still the AL East title, many fans are wondering if the team will make any blockbuster deals at the trade deadline to bolster the roster. The Jays have been linked to names like Cole Hamels, Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzidja and others recently but the past may give us a glimpse into the future when it comes to the Blue Jays plans at the deadline.

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet, the Blue Jays are unlikely to pull off a big trade at the deadline thanks to history suggesting they won’t.

In recent weeks, the Jays have been linked to some top-flight trade candidates, but they have rarely pulled the trigger on a deal during the season. That’s not to say they haven’t made trades that were massive in scope before, as they dealt for players like All-Star Jose Reyes, Cy Young winner R.A Dickey as well as ace pitchers in Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson.

There’s no saying that the Blue Jays won’t be active on the trade market and they might even change history and get involved in a deadline blockbuster. But general manager Alex Anthopoulos donut’s make moves just to make them and has proven to be smart when it comes to trades.

That’s something that has landed the Jays the talented pieces they have now and allowed them to retain the pieces that were brought in before Anthopoulos took over the job in the front office.

It’s not going to be a quiet deadline around baseball, but the Blue Jays can’t be faulted for playing it safe when that’s often times been the best move for their ballclub.
