The Atlanta Braves are atrocious this year, and they’re thinking about selling off their best assets to tear down and rebuild a winner.

There was a span of time when it was a foregone conclusion that the Braves were going to win the NL East each and every year. Those days are over, as the East is up for grabs to teams like the Nationals and Mets with even the Marlins more competitive this year than the Braves.

With the trade deadline approaching, Atlanta seems to be one of the handful of teams looking to sell high on the stars they have on roster.

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Braves will be sellers at the deadline and will be offering up players like Cameron Maybin, Juan Uribe and Jim Johnson.

Trading away Maybin might sting fans a bit, as he only arrived this year in a trade with the San Diego Padres which got rid of Melvin Upton. The Braves purged their roster this winter and that seems to be a continued theme as the deadline nears in a few weeks.

If the Braves do move Maybin, they’ll be giving up two years of club control but will also be purging $18.1 million from their payroll. That, in addition to getting sizable return for Maybin, is the reason a deal is made, if it’s indeed made.

Atlanta needs to climb back to the top of a competitive NL East, and they need young players to do that. Atlanta built itself up once before and coasted on that talent. That talent is old and useless now, and it’s high time the Braves harkened back to their old ways and crafted a winner the way baseball fans like to see.
