Cole Hamels is going to get traded to someone, the question is just a matter of who will offer the best package to the Phillies?
The Philadelphia Phillies are in a bad spot this season, losing their manager earlier in the year and losing games on a consistent basis. While they’re a mess right now, there’s hope for the future and a lot of that hope could come in the form of a trade package for ace Cole Hamels.
Last year, Hamels was a big name to watch at the deadline but he ended up not being moved. That’s seemingly going to change this summer.
According to Ken Rosenthal from FOX Sports, the Red Sox are getting ready to scout Cole Hamels this week, while the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers remain in the hunt to land the ace before the deadline passes.
Rosenthal also mentioned the Texas Rangers as a team still interested and willing to deal for Hamels, although he notes the club expects better offers to come from other teams. This doesn’t mean they’re out on talks, it just means they know their chances of landing the ace are dwindling.
Chicago and Boston will likely compete for Hamels talents, but Los Angeles has stormed out of nowhere to become real players on the market. They won’t want to give up any of their young prospects to land Hamels, and there’s also the fall back option of trading for the Reds’ Johnny Cueto, but the Dodgers are a dark horse to watch in this race.
Either way, someone is going to trade for Cole Hamels this year as the Phillies have talked up a deal way too much for it to not happen. If they someone don’t trade Hamels before the deadline then it will be one of the more massive failures in a season littered with failures for the Phillies.
