MLB Trade Deadline: Top 5 pitchers on the market
The San Diego Padres went all out this past offseason trying to acquire some big names who may finally help them get out of the NL West cellar and into the conversation of a possible wild card spot. However, that hasn’t been the case.
James Shields was one of the big names the Padres brought in via free agency and the starter who helped the Kansas City Royals make it to the World Series in 2014 had a new home. San Diego was hoping that he would help turn the Padres into contenders.
A 43-49 record just 92 games later and people are dubbing the experiment failed. The 33-year-old starter has the potential to be a No. 2 in any rotation, but he has struggled a bit this season for the reeling Padres, posting just a 3.92 ERA.
Shields’ win-loss numbers are solid at 8-3, but he is just wasting away his decent numbers on a mediocre squad looking to get better in the long-term.
San Diego is looking to sell some of the talent it picked up for the 2015 season and that’s quite a shame, because Padres fans haven’t looked forward to a season this much in years.
What a piece to the World Series puzzle Big Game James could be for a contender.
