Overview

Many pundits believed the New York Giants would move on from head coach Tom Coughlin at the end of another dismal 6-10 in Gotham. Instead, ownership decided to give Coughlin another shot, signing him to a one-year extension. General manager Jerry Reese also stayed put. Certainly, the duo winning two championships didn’t hurt their case.

In the offseason, Reese was able to find nice pieces in running back Shane Vereen and first-round pick, left tackle Ereck Flowers. Flowers was projected to start on the right side at the time, but a pectoral injury to Will Beatty is forcing a switch. Second-round pick Landon Collins should also contribute immediately at safety, trying to replace the departed Antrel Rolle.

Major Battle

With the amputation of Jason Pierre-Paul’s index finger, defensive end becomes a position to watch. Pierre-Paul is slated to start on the right side, but there is a ton of talent which could put pressure on him should his game slip. Rookie Owamagbe Odighizuwa is raw but has ample ability, while veteran George Selvie, Robert Ayers and Damontre Moore will compete for time.

Expectations

The Giants need to get back into the postseason for the first time since beating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. New York has been on the outside looking in with the oldest coach in the NFL and a quarterback who is reaching the end of the line. If the Giants have one more run in them, it needs to start in 2015.
