The Pittsburgh Pirates are close to re-acquirng Aramis Ramirez from the Milwaukee Brewers before the deadline arrives next week.

We are just days away from the MLB trade deadline and the Pittsburgh Pirates are getting in on the trade action. With names like Johnny Cueto and Justin Upton being kicked around, the Bucs have been eying moves they can make to alleviate the pains of injuries this season as they contend for an NL Central crown or a Wild Card spot.

None of those names are headed to Pittsburgh — at least not yet — but a former Pirates fan favorite is on the verge of returning.

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Pirates are close to acquiring Aramis Ramirez, bringing him back for the first time since trading him to the Chicago Cubs back in 2003.

Ramirez played for the Pirates from 1998 until 2003, and fans are already starting to welcome him back with open arms. Ramirez returning to the Bucs is in line with the theme of players returning to their original teams years after they left.

We saw LeBron James return to the Cavaliers, Kevin Garnett returned to the Timberwolves and even Randy Moss went back to the Vikings a few years ago for a brief period of time.

It’s questionable how much the third baseman has left in the tank, but the Pirates need hitting depth and adding a former fan favorite back to the roster is going to help the team in  more than one way.

UPDATE

The trade is official. The Brewers will receive pitcher Yhonathan Barrios in exchange for sending Ramirez back to the Pirates.
