NFL 2015: Five most delusional fan bases
The Chargers have a good team. In each of the last two years, head coach Mike McCoy and quarterback Philip Rivers have led San Diego to a 9-7 mark, reaching the postseason once. The Chargers are the type of team that can beat anybody on a given Sunday, but also have a penchant of losing games it should absolutely win.
Yet, after signing Orlando Franklin to fill a hole at left guard and drafting running back Melvin Gordon, hope has skyrocketed. San Diego went from a team that could justifiably make the playoffs to a team that might challenge for the Super Bowl. Look, the Chargers have some nice players, but take a hard glance at that roster.
San Diego is without any run defense and has a non-existent pass rush. The Chargers could absolutely make the playoffs as a wild card team and win a game, but good luck taking down some of the major franchises in the conference. It is tough to see Rivers and an aging supporting cast – sans Gordon – beating out the likes of the Patriots or Colts come January.
