Dallas Cowboys running back Ruben Randle gets slapped on the wrist for stealing cologne from a local mall.

Joseph Randle gets paid by the Dallas Cowboys to run away from opposing defenses while carrying the football. However, his inability to run away from a mall cop, and subsequently the law, led to a misdemeanor theft charge in October.

On Friday, Randle pleaded guilty to the charges, striking a plea deal with local prosecutors that resulted in a deferred adjudication and six months of probation for the running back according to the Dallas Morning News. If he makes it through his probabation with no further issues, the misdemeanor will be wiped from his record.

On October 13, 2014, Randle was stopped by a security guard after he left a Dillards at Stonebriar Mall in Frisco, Texas. The guard stopped Randle because he had left the store without paying for $120 worth of cologne and underwear. In his infinite wisdom, Randle told the arresting officer that he didn’t pay because he didn’t want to take the time and “should have just kept walking to his car if he knew he was going to be arrested.”

Yeah, we’re talking about someone that completely thought this major heist through.  Let’s take a look at where he failed, shall we?

  • According to Spotrac, Randle was paid $495,000 for the 2014. In contrast, perhaps paying the $120 for some clean drawers and a fresher scent should have been more heavily considered.
  • If he was in such a hurry, why did he not go right to his car?
  • Did he not hear the “everything you say can and will get held against you in a court of law” bit when he was read his Miranda Rights?

Perhaps a concussion test should be in order here for Mr. Randle, who also had felony charges dropped against him in Kansas after brandishing a weapon at a friend of his ex-girlfriend and her child. But hey, the Cowboys are seemingly content on simply fining him rather than the more merited suspension or release. Then again, Sheriff Roger Goodell has yet to have his say on the matter.

Entering his third season with the Cowboys, Randle looks to see an increase in touches with the departure of DeMarco Murray and the subsequent signing of Darren McFadden. In two seasons as a back-up, Randle has seen action in 29 games, including two starts (2013), tallying five touchdowns and 507 yards on 105 rushing attempts. He also has 12 receptions for 84 yards.
