Right now most of the fantasy sports world is centered around preparing for the stretch run of fantasy baseball and the draft season of fantasy football. That makes for a perfect time to start looking at your fantasy basketball drafts and be way ahead of your competition. In this post I am going to take a look at my early thoughts on whether or not I will spend the draft picks necessary to pick up some of these rookies in my fantasy basketball leagues.
In most of the competitive keeper/dynasty leagues that I play in rookies are extremely over-valued. In order to draft a rookie in a league like that, you have to reach a little farther than you would in a normal re-draft league. With some of these guys my league-mates think they are drafting the next Anthony Davis or Stephen Curry. With that in mind drafting most of the rookies is usually done by the other people in my leagues.
I want to take a quick look at some of the rookies that I think could have some impact in fantasy leagues and whether or not I would consider drafting them.
Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota Timberwolves: Towns is most likely going to be an early impact player in the NBA due to where he was drafted. He should get every opportunity to get plenty of minutes and have every chance to develop his game. If you are in an offensive dependent league he is likely going to suffer as it will probably take his offensive game a little longer to mature. I would probably draft him around the seventh or eighth round of a standard sized league.
D’Angelo Russell, Los Angeles Lakers: Russell has a great shot of being a long-term successful player in the NBA. I am not really expecting a lot from him early on and especially if Kobe Bryant is healthy this year. I probably am not looking to draft him on my team unless it is a dynasty or deep keeper league. If I were to go after him in a standard sized league I would not invest much more than a tenth round pick.
Jahlil Okafor, Philadelphia 76ers: Okafor is most likely going to be my bet for NBA Rookie of the Year. I will probably be looking to draft him just a bit before Towns. I think he will be pretty well-rounded and be a impact player for the 76ers. I would most likely be looking for him in the seventh round and possibly even the sixth.
Mario Hezonja, Orlando Magic: Hezonja is a very talented player. He is a scoring machine and most likely will be the same in the NBA. He most likely won’t be a very well-rounded player and I will likely only draft him in cats leagues where I feel like I need points. I would probably look for him in the late rounds like after the tenth round or so.
Emmanuel Mudiay, Denver Nuggets: With the trade of Ty Lawson to the Houston Rockets, Mudiay offcilly became the PG of the future in Denver. He will probably struggle some in the early going, but in H2H leagues he could be a huge benefit down the stretch. In normal, standard sized leagues I would probaly draft him around the seventh or eighth round and in dynasty or keeper leagues I would probably look for him a round or two earlier than that.
