Gold Cup Final: Mexico dominates Jamaica 3-1
By Mike Dyce
Mexico defeated Jamaica to win the 2015 Gold Cup.
Mexico didn’t particularly waltz into the Gold Cup Final looking dominant or intimidating. They reached the final thanks to a pair of late, controversial calls that gave them a penalty.
Against Jamaica in the final, Mexico reared its head and played like the team we expected to see. In the first half Andres Guardado scored a beautifully volley to give his side the lead.
The momentum was clearly with Mexico and Jesus Corona added an insurance goal. While it might of not been as dazzling as Guardado’s goal off the volley, Corona showed grit and determination to fight for the ball, bring it in on his own and perfect ball placement to find the back of the net.
With the flood gates open, Oribe Peralta pounced on a Jamaica mistake to easily put the ball in the back of the net and extend the lead to 3-0/
Jamaica’s Darren Mattocks scored Jamaica’s first goal of the game to cut the lead in the 80th minute, but still down two goals with 10 minutes left in the game seemed like too much to overcome.
It was a dream run for Jamaica, who knocked off the United States men’s national team en route to the their first ever Gold Cup final, but Mexico got it together and put on a solid performance on the tournament’s biggest stage.
