Tottenham

Players In:

Kevin Wimmer – Cologne

Kieran Trippier – Burnley

Toby Alderweireld – Atletico Madrid

Players Out:

Etienne Capoue – Watford

Paulinho – Guangzhou Evergrande

Lewis Holtby – Hamburg

Younes Kaboul – Sunderland

It is important to remember that Tottenham finished fifth in the Premier League last year, ahead of Liverpool and Southampton. However, much of their success stemmed from the outstanding performances of two men; Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen.

They will not want to be as reliant on two men this year and have already focussed their spending on strengthening their back line. Kieran Trippier will provide serious competition for Kyle Walker at right back, whilst Toby Alderweireld showed his class with Southampton last year.

Striker

More from Premier League

Harry Kany may be the hottest young player on the planet right now, but this shouldn’t paper over the cracks at Tottenham, who need another striker. They have done well to put sides off bidding for Kane, but in Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor, their depth just isn’t there.

They look keen to add another English forward to their ranks and there are a couple available who Tottenham could well be looking at. Saido Berahino is a rough diamond, but has bags of potential. Charlie Austin is simply a proven goalscorer, although arguably less exciting than Berahino.

Midfielder

With the departure of Paulinho and some other midfielders in the squad it is surprising to see that Tottenham haven’t made a move in this area of the pitch. It is possible they are content building their younger players, like Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason.

Nevertheless, I would worry that they lack some steel in the middle of the park that will win them the big games. Without a doubt they need to sign a central midfielder who is in the upper echelons if they are to maintain their fifth place finish. They may even need two top central midfielders.
