1. Cubs trade for Nomar Garciaparra

It’s hard to believe that Nomar Garciaparra was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Chicago Cubs 11 years ago. In 2004, the Cubs were in desperate need of a veteran presence who could provide some much-needed defensive support on the infield.

  • The year before this trade went down, Garciaparra hit .301 with 28 homers and 105, being named to yet another All-Star Game and finishing seventh in the American League MVP voting.

The oft-injured, yet uber-popular, shortstop struggled to remain on the field in 2004, leading to an unexpected deal on July 31 that sent him to Chicago for Doug Mientkiewicz and Orlando Cabrera in a three-team trade.

Garciaparra was getting up there in age when this trade went down, though, as the 30-year-old shortstop ended up playing just five more years in the majors before calling it quits.

Why was this such a big deal? At the time, Garciaparra was still considered one of the biggest superstars in the game and the Red Sox were in the midst of a World Series season. The trade didn’t end up hurting them, however, as they ended up winning it all, but Nomar found himself struggling to get back to his old self.

I bet every Sox fan yearns for those Garciaparra years again.
