10. Phillies trade Hunter Pence to Giants

The Philadelphia Phillies have been in sell mode for a few years now and this deal was one of the first big moves that the organization made in order to build for the future. Hunter Pence has already helped the San Francisco Giants win two World Series titles — one in 2012 when he was dealt for and the other in 2014.

  • This was the same deadline in which the Phillies also parted ways with center fielder Shane Victorino. All-in-all, it was a big deadline day for Philadelphia and many pieces for the future were given to the City of Brotherly Love.

However, the Giants have to be considered winners in this one. In the two full seasons after the trade, Pence hit .283 with 27 homers and 99 RBI as well as .277 with 20 dingers and 74 RBI, respectively.

What did the Phillies get in return? Three prospects. Catcher Tommy Joseph has still yet to make his major league debut, righty Seth Rosin has struggled in four appearances and right fielder Nate Schierholtz played just 37 games with the Phillies.

There’s a reason why Philadelphia just can’t seem to buy a winning season these days and it’s likely because of trades such as this one.

Two World Series titles trumps 41 total games between the three prospects any day.
