9. Padres trade Jake Peavy to White Sox

Remember when Jake Peavy was one of the most dominant starters in all of baseball? That seems like so long ago, but the former Cy Young winner and MVP candidate was the subject of, at the time, a huge trade, sending him to the White Sox for a decent starter and two average relievers.

  • Following a World Series title in 2005, the White Sox were desperate to make it back to the title series, but hadn’t had any such luck in the following years. Trading for Peavy was thought to bring back the spark.

Peavy was coming off a season in which he was 10-11 with a 2.85 ERA in 2008 and he had gotten off to a bit of a slow start to the 2009 campaign. He was just 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA and his stuff wasn’t as electric as it used to be.

The White Sox took a chance, however, and snagged the former un-hittable ace, hoping that it was just a minor slump. He battled injuries throughout his time in the Windy City, finishing only one season with more than 19 starts and even coming out of the bullpen for the first time in his career.

In return for Peavy, the Padres received lefty reliever Aaron Poreda who played just four games with the organization, righty reliever Adam Russell who played just 27 games and starter Clayton Richard who was on the team for three-plus years.

There are no real winners in this one, but if I had to pick, I’d say the White Sox came out on top.
