Indianapolis Colts – Robert Mathis

Why is he the pick?

Mathis led the league in sacks in 2013, showcasing his skills even without his longtime partner-in-crime, Dwight Freeney. However, Mathis’ offseason last year could not have been a bigger disaster. It started with Mathis getting suspended four games under the NFL’s performance enhancing drug policy. Then, while working out, Mathis sustained a torn Achilles, putting him out for the campaign.

Mathis is working toward getting 100 percent healthy and should be back on the field early in the season. After general manager Ryan Grigson went out and signed outside linebacker Trent Cole this month, he has put a logjam at the position with Mathis, Cole and former first-round pick Bjoern Werner. This will be a battle to see who gets the playing time.

What is at stake?

If he’s healthy, Mathis should be getting plenty of snaps. However, if he fails to bounce back and produce on the field, teams can block the Colts easily. Offensive lines could shift to double-team Cole or Werner while the left tackle handles Mathis with a single man. If Mathis is healthy, Indianapolis stands to have a terrific pass-rush, only bolstered by an offense that should have it in the lead often.
