Minnesota Vikings – Matt Kalil

Why is he the pick?

Kalil is another NFC North left tackle who has to start playing like an elite talent. Kalil came into the league with a brother already entrenched as a star with the Carolina Panthers, Ryan. The little brother has struggled to live up to the family name, allowing consistent pressure from the left side. The line allowed 51 sacks last year due in large part to Kalil, who really struggled.

According to Pro Football Focus, Kalil was the worst tackle in football in 2014 outside of Byron Bell. Kalil was a good part of the reason that the team went through three quarterbacks, something head coach Mike Zimmer and Co. can’t afford to see again. Second-year quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has a talented cast around him, but everything could be undone if the line stinks.

What is at stake?

Minnesota’s passing game. Mike Wallace was the big addition to the receiving corps in the offseason, but his specialty is going deep. Wallace is not much of a route-runner, so he needs to be afforded time. If Kalil and the boys up front can’t keep the rush at bay, Minnesota will be back to relying constantly on Adrian Peterson to move the football.
