Ranking the best sports cities in the United States
By Mike Dyce
10. Detroit
Detroit gets a bad rep, but the city is home to four major professional sports franchises: Tigers (MLB), Pistons (NBA), Lions (NFL) and Red Wings (NHL).
The Detroit Lions have been miserable for the better part of their existence, but stars in Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson had the team poised for a deep playoff run earlier this year if it weren’t for a controversial call in the Wild Card round.
The Pistons have fallen off, but this is a team that dominated earlier in the 2000s winning an NBA Title with Larry Brown.
The Red Wings are one of the most prestigious franchises in the history of the NHL, winning the Stanley Cup most recently in 2002 and 2008. They’re a franchise that is always looking to contend.
The Tigers are another solid franchise led by some big stars in pitcher Justin Verlander and slugger Miguel Cabrera. This team is regularly contending for their division crown and won the AL Pennant recently in 2006 and 2012.
Add into that the few big time sporting events that come to town and you have a sports fan dream. The Super Bowl was hosted in Detroit in 2006. The MLB All-Star game came to town in 2005.
The WWE has brought two WrestleManias to Detroit, most recently Ford Field hosted WrestleMania 23 in 2007. Ford Field has hosted a Final Four and a Frozen Four.
Don’t forget, Ann Arbor, home of the Michigan Wolverines, is just under an hour outside of Detroit. That means Big 10 sports and college football at the Big House.
