With training camp just opening up, the Houston Texans were dealt a pretty stiff blow on Tuesday with the news that running back Arian Foster will be lost for a while. The veteran back went down with a groin injury that will ultimately require surgery, keeping him out for an extended period of time.
That being the case, the Texans need some help in the backfield. Foster is most certainly an integral part of this Houston offense, so replacing him won’t be all that easy. For a potential replacement, the Texans will look to another veteran running back, Pierre Thomas, who will reportedly be working out for the team on Wednesday.
Thomas, 30, has spent his entire career with the New Orleans Saints, joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 2007. While he never broke the 1,000-yard barrier, he most of the time proved to be a viable hand in the backfield. In his eight-year career, Thomas has rushed for 3,745 yards with 28 touchdowns. He won’t set the world on fire, but his veteran presence with this team could end up helping out a little bit, at the very least.
The Texans have been put in quite the tough situation here. However, it’s happened early enough here in camp where they have time to explore some potential options when it comes to a replacement. Thomas will apparently be the first of those options they’ll take a look at.
Who knows, if everything goes well on Wednesday, then he’ll be the last option they’ll take a look at.
