20: Detroit Tigers

ACQUIRED: LHP Daniel Norris (from Blue Jays), LHP Matt Boyd (from Blue Jays), SS JaCoby Jones (from Pirates), LHP Jairo Labourt (from Blue Jays), RHP Michael Fulmer (from Tigers), RHP Luis Cessa (from Mets)

TRADED: LHP David Price (to Blue Jays), OF Yoenis Cespedes (to Tigers), RHP Joakim Soria (to Pirates)

It must have been a bittersweet trade deadline for the Detroit Tigers. After years of being a buyer and starting the 2015 on a roll, the Tigers were forced to sell and start over after a tremendous slide after April. The loss of Miguel Cabrera to injury didn’t help and neither did the fact that a strong portion of the roster was built around expiring contracts. That left the Tigers with little to no choice in the matter.

But they aren’t mad about it.

With David Price, Yoenis Cespedes, and Joakim Soria on the block as premium rental talent, the Tigers have to be ecstatic about unloading all three and doing so for some serious talent. With price, the landed two MLB-ready pitchers in Daniel Norris and Matt Boyd, with Norris being #25 prospect in the game. They also landed a solid shortstop prospect in JaCoby Jones, another talented lefty in Jairo LaBourt, and a pair of rising right-handers in Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa.

Think the Tigers farm system needed a boost? Norris (#1), Fullmer (#5), Boyd (#8), and Cessa (#9) all landed in the top-10 of Detroit’s prospects. Jones drops in at #13 and LaBourt at #15, giving the Tigers five top-20 prospects to build around. Let’s just say this is a much better return than a comp pick.
