17: Arizona Diamondbacks

ACQUIRED: None

TRADED: None

Unlike division-mate San Diego, not many expected much from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the trade deadline. As such, they weren’t very disappointed when the team did absolutely nothing during the summer trade-fest.

That wasn’t for lack of trying though. Dave Stewart was said to be very far into the conversation with the Cincinnati Reds to acquire closer Aroldis Chapman, someone that Stewart covets extensively. However when you aim for the stars, you sometimes come up short and Stewart wasn’t able to get a deal done in perhaps the deadline’s toughest arena.

The Diamondbacks sit in the same position as the Padres, but you can clearly see a different plan in place in Arizona than you do in San Diego. The DBacks have some solid talent to build around for the next several seasons and could even look to move some relievers during the waiver period to further infuse that base. For Arizona, it wasn’t necessarily treading water as it was making smart decisions.
