13: New York Mets

ACQUIRED: OF Yoenis Cespedes (from Tigers), RHP Tyler Clippard (from Athletics), 3B Juan Uribe (from Braves), INF Kelly Johnson (from Braves)

TRADED: RHP Michael Fulmer (to Tigers), RHP Luis Cessa (to Tigers), RHP John Gant (to Braves), RHP Rob Whalen (to Braves), RHP Casey Meisner (to Athletics)

Whether it was pure brilliance or just an odd way of doing business, the New York Mets certainly had many wondering what the hell was going on in the front offices before the dust settled on the trade deadline.

First they struck a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers to acquire Carlos Gomez for Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores. Then they left Flores on the field crying instead of pulling him from the game. Then the trade fell through and Sandy Alderson blamed Twitter for jumping the gun.

But wait, it gets better.

The Mets then had a deal in place to bring Jay Bruce to Queens. However, that deal also fell through when the Reds felt they could get better than Wheeler in a return package. The Mets went back to square one with just hours to go before the deadline.

Finally, New York settled for Yoenis Cespedes and perhaps overpaid for him by having to include Michael Fullmer in the deal rather than Wheeler. Yes, they acquired the right-handed power bat the line-up needed, but Cespedes’ free-swinging ways aren’t exactly what the team wanted. However, they made up for that by adding both Tyler Clippard and Juan Uribe in separate deals.
