2: St. Louis Cardinals

ACQUIRED: OF Brandon Moss (from Indians), RHP Steve Cishek (from Marlins), RHP Jonathan Broxton (from Brewers)

TRADED: LHP Rob Kaminsky (to Indians), RHP Kyle Barraclough (to Marlins), OF Malik Collymore (to Brewers)

Like Pirates, who sit directly behind them in the division, the St. Louis Cardinals have very few soft spots in their roster. Already sporting the best rotation in baseball, the teams went into the deadline looking to bolster the bullpen and possibly add a bat. The injury to Matt Holliday only accentuated the need to pick up some offense.

Also like the Pirates, the Cardinals front office was able to find a means to an end for everything they required. They also managed to do so without sacrificing a ton from their deep farm system. Yes, they were likely robbed of Rob Kaminsky by the Indians. However, Brandon Moss is a significant pull for them, especially given the fact that he can play both the outfield corners and first base while providing a plus bat from the left side of the plate.

With Trevor Rosenthal tiring in the bullpen, the Cardinals also added two former closers in Steve Cishek and Jonathan Broxton, both of which will lengthen the pen a bit and take the stress off of Rosenthal and Kevin Seigrist.

The Cardinals didn’t exactly wow at the deadline but they didn’t need to either. They just proved that the organizations efficiency required very few cogs to get to a finished product.
