Thinks about this for a minute. One day, the Milwaukee Brewers had a deal in place to acquire Zack Wheeler and shortstop Wilmer Flores for outfielder Carlos Gomez. That deal fell through before half of the players could be told (yes, I said half) and the Brewers went looking for another deal.
It was the best thing that could happen to them.
Milwaukee ended up pairing Gomez with starter Mike Fiers and arguably swung a bigger deal by sending them to the Astros for outfielders Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana, LHP Josh Hader, and RHP Adrian Houser. Phillips and Santana immediately become the team’s #2 and #4 prospects, giving the Brewers some much needed hitting prospects for the future. Hader enters at #15 and Houser drops in at #28.
But the Brewers weren’t done either. They took outfielder Gerardo Parra, an impending free agent, and got the Baltimore Orioles to overbuy and give them promising right-hander Zach Davies (#11). They flipped third baseman Aramis Ramirez to the Pirates for RHP Yhontan Barrios and reliever Jonathan Broxton for OF Malik Collymore.
Arguably, there was no team in need of a rebuild that did more to help their case than did the Brewers. However, they still have some more to get done with Matt Garza and Kyle Lohse potential waiver deals in August. None of these moves will rescue the 2015 season, but the Brewers have found a way to make the best out of a losing situation and improve the future.
