Ryan Tannehill-Miami Dolphins
I’ve been on board the Tannehill bandwagon since early last season, and he has delivered some nice numbers that helped me find success in two-QB leagues. He has quietly progressed nicely in Miami improving his completion percentage, passing yards, and passing touchdowns in each of his three season as a pro.
Last year, Tannehill had double-digit fantasy points in ESPN Standard scoring in 15 of his 16 games. He threw for a touchdown in every game but one and had three games with three or more passing TD’s.
Tannehill also does a surprising amount of work with his legs rushing for 45 yards or more in four straight games in the middle of last season. While he doesn’t usually get running plays called for him, his skills as a former wide receiver do come in handy on broken plays when he finds himself in space.
One of the concerns that will keep players away from Tannehill is that he did have some turnover at his receiver spot with Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline moving on this offseason. However, Greg Jennings and Kenny Stills were brought in by the Dolphins and second-year receiver Jarvis Landry is one of my top breakout candidates at WR (more on them later this preseason). I actually think the Dolphins receiving corps is just as strong as last year, and with Tannehill’s continued growth should be even more effective.
Taking Tannehill as a top-ten QB is risky, so I’d avoid him until the big names are gone. That being said, I do think he will finish in the top ten in fantasy points barring injury. If you can get him at the right price, Tannehill could be a valuable trade chip, an awesome replacement, or a top-end second QB.
I’m targeting Tannehill as soon as players like Tony Romo, Matt Ryan, and Ben Roethlisberger are off the board. In my rankings, I have him just inside the top ten one slot ahead of Eli Manning since I think his floor is higher and his upside ultimately more attainable.
