The Bullpen

The Yankees starting rotation has left a lot to be desired this season. Between age, injury, and just plain inconsistency, it’s put a lot of stress on that bullpen. Fortunately for the Yankees, their bullpen is a pretty darn good one.

Let’s start at the end of the game with closer Andrew Miller. A lot was made of the Yankees letting David Robertson leave via free agency and signing Miller instead, but it turns out to have worked pretty well, even if he missed some time with an arm injury.

Miller this season has 23 saves, a WHIP of 0.72, an ERA of 1.75 and has struck out 54 hitters in 36 innings. Not a bad free agent signing.

There’s also All-Star Dellin Betances. Betances subbed as closer for Miller when he was hurt and the Yankees didn’t miss a beat. Betances is 6-2 with a 1.37 ERA and has 88 strikeouts in 55 innings.

Justin Wilson and Chasen Shreve were acquired in trades during the off-season and have given the Yankees a couple of left-handed weapons out of the bullpen.

Shreve was considered a throw-in in the trade with David Carpenter, but Shreve has been the main cog in the trade. The lefty is 6-1 with a 2.18 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 41 innings.
