Just when you thought things were going in the right direction for the Miami Marlins, tragedy strikes. Star pitcher Jose Fernandez is back on the disabled list. He just returned from Tommy John surgery, so another injury this season hurts both the Marlins and fantasy owners.

Fernandez left last Friday’s start after 76 pitchers. On Saturday, he returned to Miami to have his right shoulder examined. Without any more information, this didn’t sound good. News broke the next day that Fernandez is dealing with a biceps strain and was placed on the 15-day DL. That noise you heard was Marlins’ ownership and fantasy owners breathing a collective sigh of relief.

Regardless, this is one less superstar pitcher that owners can use for their team. Fernande owners should now use the streaming pitchers strategy to fill Fernandez’s spot.

In his spot, the Marlins called up Justin Nicolino. I mention his name just for news purposes. By no means should you pick him up, even before his outing on Tuesday.

With the Marlins 16 games back of the first-place New York Mets, the Marlins may make the executive decision to shut down Jose Fernandez for the rest of the season. If that is the case, he should be dropped in redraft leagues in order to free up some roster space.

However, Fernandez feels complete different about the situation. “As long as I’m healthy, I’m coming back,” he said on Tuesday.

Some pitchers to keep an eye on just in case of some bad news are Luis Severino (68.8 ESPN.com ownership percentage), Chris Bassitt (23.8 percent) and Joe Ross (50.7 percent).

Until a return date is set or not, Fernandez is still rosterable. It isn’t a favorable situation for owners, but unfortunately there is nothing you can do. If I were a Jose Fernandez owner, I would  be prepared for him to be shut down for the rest of the season and begin looking at the waiver wire for replacements.
