The Philadelphia Eagles were more active than any other National Football League team this offseason. Philadelphia went 10-6 in each of the first two seasons under head coach Chip Kelly, but the mad scientist decided to blow the roster up.
Kelly decided to release Trent Cole, Todd Herremans and Evan Mathis while watching Jeremy Maclin and Cary Williams leave in free agency. Kelly also traded away LeSean McCoy to acquire middle linebacker Kiko Alonso and dealt Nick Foles for Sam Bradford. While the result of this massive shake-up remains to be seen, the roster turnover is paying off beautifully in jersey sales.
The Eagles signed DeMarco Murray to replace the departed McCoy, and the NFL’s leading rusher from last year currently ranks third in jersey sales this season behind only Joe Haden and Odell Beckham Jr. McCoy ranks ninth, giving the Eagles a win there.
Philadelphia checks in third overall, showing that the fans are still very excited about the upcoming season. Perhaps Eagles fans are buying into the hope that Kelly can guide this new collection of players to the franchise’s first NFL title since 1960. Oddly enough, despite the nice ranking in jersey sales, only Murray ranks in the top 40 of individual players.
It will be interesting to see if Bradford’s jersey starts to shoot up the rankings if he plays well in the preseason. Bradford was the first-overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams but has seen each of his last two seasons cut short with torn ACLs.
