The Eagles preseason opener was all about Tim Tebow, but Matt Barkley decided to steal the show early on.

If you thought Matt Barkley was going to be a stud in the Eagles first preseason game, you were standing alone in a closet somewhere in a dank Philadelphia bar. But when Barkley came out for his first drive of the afternoon, that closest was a very happy place.

Barkley relieved Mark Sanchez in the first quarter and led the Eagles down the field for a touchdown in a drive that featured two spectacular throws.

On those two passes he made throws that we expected to go as badly as his throws usually go but they were connected with interesting accuracy. One of them was zipped into Jordan Matthews in what was an absolutely perfect throw by Barkley.

The pass to Miles Austin is the one that set social media ablaze for a short moment with sudden praise for the former USC product.

It’s hard to fathom that first drive, but then again we haven’t seen much out of Barkley in his brief NFL career and there’s plenty of room for him to develop. That’s very clearly what he’s doing, and while his game isn’t perfect, he’s clearly going to give Tim Tebow a run for his money.
