5. Dick Butkus

Dick Butkus was one of the most feared defenders and linebackers of his generation. NFL Network named him the most frightening tackler in the history of the NFL.

Butkus played nine years before injuries ended his career early. During those nine seasons he made eight Pro Bowl teams and was named an All-Pro eight times. He was twice named the Defensive Player of the Year.

During his career he set the record for defensive fumble recoveries at 27, which was the active record when he retired from the league. Butkus also compiled over 1,000 tackles while intercepting quarterbacks 23 different times, proving he could do it all.

After his career came to an end prematurely due to knee injuries, his number was retired by the Bears and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1979. He was also named to the 1960s and 1970s NFL All-Decade team.

Butkus is widely considered to be one of the best players in the history of the NFL.

Shockingly Butkus never got to play in the post season to even compete for a Super Bowl, landing him on this list. His Bears teams were awful and lost more games than they won.
