One waiver trade deadline deal every MLB team should make
Once again, the Miami Marlins were busy acquiring prospects at the non-waiver trade deadline and sending away veterans. Long out of the Wild Card race, the Marlins unloaded Dan Haren, Sam Dyson, Mat Latos and Michael Morse in late July and received several modest prospects in return. One player the team held on to, but could still be a target of other clubs, is infielder Martin Prado.
Word is that the Yankees and Royals both made inquiries with Miami about Prado in July. Because Kansas City traded for Ben Zobrist, who as a super utility player has a similar skillset to Prado’s, he’s no longer needed in KC.New York (who traded Prado to the Marlins over the off-season) is still an option. If the Angels lose out on Utley and Brandon Phillips, Prado would be a great option to play second base.
Prado is expected to make $11 next season, which is high for the Marlins. If the team has an opportunity to unload him for a fair return, it makes sense.
