One waiver trade deadline deal every MLB team should make
The Diamondbacks were one of the first teams to make a waiver trade this season when they traded shortstop Cliff Pennington and cash to the Blue Jays for shortstop prospect Dewel Lugo August 8. In fact, the D-Backs made two trades that day – they also sent lefty Oliver Perez to the Houston Astros for left-handed pitching prospect Junior Garvia.
Out of the playoff race but looking ahead to 2016, Arizona made a push for Cincinnati’s flame-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman prior to the non-waiver deadline, but the lefty wouldn’t make it through waivers this month, and is therefore, not a realistic option in August.
However, more trades could still be made. Former All-Star second baseman Aaron Hill is due $12 million in 2016, but is hitting just .230/.298/.343 with five home runs, which makes him a prime candidate for a waiver trade deadline deal if someone will pick up some of the tab.
There are plenty of teams in need of a second baseman with some pop – including the team Hill played for when he made the All-Star team in 2009, the Toronto Blue Jays. However, because the D-Backs and Blue Jays already made the deal involving Pennington, the New York Yankees may be a more likely partner. If Arizona can unload Hill, they’ll likely be happy to take whatever they can get.
