43. . 64-51. 1st Place AL East. New York Yankees. 19. player

For the first time in a long time, the Yankees have been much more active promoting prospects to from the minors in July and August than they have been adding veterans through trades. Players like Mason Williams, Luis Severion, Rob Refsnyder and Greg Bird, among others, have made their big league debuts this season for the Bronx Bombers, and there are several other highly regarded prospects still in the New York farm system that the club has been unwilling to trade away for rentals.

Frankly, it’s a nice change of pace compared to the way we’ve seen the Yankees gut their minor league rosters in the past in order to load up on high-priced veterans. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few small trades that could help the Yankees capture the AL East.

Would Chase Utley be an upgrade over Stephen Drew? Probably, especially against right-handed pitchers, but other teams have a better shot at the Phillies veteran second baseman. As we already mentioned, Jeff Samardzija could be a possible option to bolster the starting rotation, as could Ian Kennedy. But the most likely move New York would make would be to acquire a backup outfielder.

In that case, expect the Yankees to target someone like Domonic Brown. An All-Star in 2013 when he hit 27 home runs, Brown has struggled with the Phillies since. In 166 plate appearances this season, the 27-year old is hitting just .239/.289/.361 with four homers. His power would play well at Yankee Stadium, and he doesn’t appear to be part of the future in Philadelphia.
