As we’ve already mentioned, the San Francisco Giants are reportedly interested in second baseman Chase Utley, but one of the biggest needs the team has is in the outfield. Angel Pagan just landed on the disabled list and Nori Aoki is on the 7-day DL, which leaves Gregor Blanco and Justin Maxwell to team with Hunter Pence as outfield starters.

Brandon Belt has also played outfield when Buster Posey starts at first base, but adding another outfielder through a trade would help tremendously. There are plenty of options, including Coco Crisp, Seth Smith, Jonny Gomes, but let’s consider something we’ve yet to talk about.

If the Giants miss out on Utley, they will still need depth in the infield. Joe Panik is eligible to return from the DL on August 17, but back issues are always tricky so it’s best to have some insurance. Therefore, a super utility player like Emilio Bonifacio could be the best of both worlds.

The well traveled 30-year old has hit just .169/.200/.195 in 45 games for the White Sox this season, but he’s played second base, third base, center field and left field and would also offer speed off the bench as a pinch runner. Designated for assignment Sunday, Bonifacio’s move is imminent.
