ESPN apologized to the New England Patriots on Thursday morning when everyone was asleep — something the team passively pointed out on Twitter.

When ESPN decided to spend all day covering the Tom Brady appeal hearing in New York, we knew something was going to go wrong at some point. It actually happened on a few separate occasions, as ESPN twice reported on false information regarding a 2002 investigation into the team.

Needless to say, the Patriots and their fans weren’t too happy about this and the backlash was immediate. However, it took ESPN until the midnight edition of SportsCenter to give a apology to the team. This also didn’t go over well with the team, who responded to the apology in the most Patriots-Bill Belichick way they possibly could have.

After the Steve Levy apology ran in the wee hours of Thursday morning, the Patriots Twitter account proceeded to get very passive in accepting the apology.

There’s a lot to love about that tweet. First of all, the Patriots official response to the apology is that they saw it and by doing so seemingly accepted it. On the other hand, the video that they used has the title ‘ESPN Apologizes to New England Patriots While Everyone Is Alseep‘ and it’s the most brilliantly passive thing ever.

It’s so indicative of who the Patriots are. They never believe they do anything wrong, refuse to apologize and accept none in return. It’s what we all love to hate about them and in their darkest hour they’re passively at their best.
