After a little bit of a wait, we might have learned the fate of J.R. Smith on Thursday night from…J.R. Smith
Ever since the NBA Free Agency period opened up, many wondered whether or not the ever-controversial J.R. Smith would return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Opting out of his current deal to see if there was anywhere else he may fit, there was no guarantee that the Eastern Conference Champions would make a hard effort to bring him back into the fold.
Well, apparently the two sides were able to come to an agreement after all this time.
On his Instagram account Thursday, Smith announced that he will be re-signing with the Cavaliers, keeping this squad even more together for next season.
While Smith didn’t necessarily light the world on fire for this team last year, he did have his moments, especially in the postseason. Plus, after a controversial career elsewhere, especially with the Knicks, it seems like the Cavaliers are just a good fit for him overall. So, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
Last season for the Cavaliers in their run to the NBA Finals, Smith averaged 12.7 points per game with 3.5 rebounds. When the postseason rolled around, his scoring improved slightly to 12.8 points per game.
So, it looks as if the Cavaliers are getting back one of their more valuable role players as they look to capture that NBA title that eluded them last season.
