The more things change, the more they stay the same. Well, that is unless you’re NFL defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and we’re talking about your jersey sales. In that case, things are a little different, and in a good way.
This past off-season the Miami Dolphins went out and they ponied up the money to land the controversial defensive star. After spending the first five seasons of his career with the Detroit Lions, Suh and the Dolphins came to terms on a lucrative deal for six years and $114 million with $60 million of that money guaranteed. Quite the nice payday for one of the best players in the game, indeed.
However, aside from the fact that he was changing teams for the first time in his professional career, another move that Suh made was changing his jersey number. During his five years with the Lions, everyone knew who No. 90 was out on that field, which was the number the former Nebraska standout wore. But with the move to Miami now, Suh changed that number to 93.
When you factor in these two changes, you have to be wondering what sort of effect this had on the jersey sales for one of the most popular players in the game today. Did his move to Miami make things better? Would the number change make its mark? Well, there was a change and it was a positive one.
According to the DICK’S Sporting Goods Jersey Report, which reflects sales both nationwide and online, Suh’s jersey sales have jumped 45 spots since the end of last season. When the 2014 NFL season came to a close, Suh was sitting way down in the 78th spot. But now, he’s comfortably sitting at 33. It should also be pointed out as well that Suh is the fifth-ranked defensive player in overall sales as we head into the season.
So for those that were wondering whether or not Suh’s jersey sales would be affected with all that happened this off-season, they were — and in a way that will benefit him and the Dolphins in the money department. It’ll be interesting to see how this trend keeps moving as he begins his career with his new team.
