After injuries depleted the tight end position for the Washington Redskins, the team has gone out and acquired tight end Derek Carrier from the San Francisco 49ers.

In a move that should come as no shock to anyone, the Washington Redskins have acquired a tight end. After losing both Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen for the season, the Redskins were in desperate need of a tight end on the roster.

On Friday, it was reported that Redskins have acquired tight end Derek Carrier from the San Francisco 49ers for a conditional fifth-round pick.

The 49ers had entered training camp with eight tight ends on the roster, with four of them very talented in Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Blake Bell and Garrett Celek. There was simply no room for Carrier on the roster, and with the team in transition thanks to several unexpected retirements and releases, adding another pick is an easy decision for the 49ers to make.

The 49ers had signed Carrier to a two-year extension in the off-season, and liked what they had seen from the tight end who had made the transition from wide receiver since entering the pros. It appears that Carrier was a hot commodity and the Redskins had some competition for acquiring the services of the tight end.

According to Ian Rapoport, the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears were also interested in Carrier.

In the end, it was the potential of possibly landing a fifth-round pick that swayed San Francisco into sending Carrier to a desperate Washington team in need of a tight end.

His blocking needs the most improvement when it comes to his skill set, so he should currently fit in with the guys he lines up next to just fine. The added bonus is that the team will have him for two years on the roster, and next season could have a solid tight end core when Paul and Paulsen return.
