Over the course of history in the National Football League, there have been great teams. Most of those groups have raised the Lombardi Trophy in the ultimate game, claiming a Super Bowl title to forever be remembered by. However, the NFL’s history is also littered with incredibly talented groups who fell short, sometimes not even reaching the Super Bowl.
The league’s first season was in 1920, but we are simply looking at groups in the Super Bowl era (1966 to present). Before that, there were legions of great teams that did not win the championship, including some of the 1950s New York Giants teams and a handful of Washington Redskins squads with Sammy Baugh at the helm.
With that said, we reveal the 30 best teams from the Super Bowl era to not walk away with the jewelry. Some franchises have come tantalizingly close multiple times, while others have not even sniffed greatness. Depending on your vantage point, the teams which have come so close to greatness only to fall short is likely even more painful than the ineptitude of others.
